What is a VAC ban in Rust

VAC stands for Valve Anti-Cheat. If a Steam account has a VAC ban, it's because Valve's automated system detected cheating on it -no human decides it by hand, and there's no way to appeal it or remove it afterwards. If it shows up on a profile, it's real.

How Valve decides someone cheated

VAC runs in the background during matches on VAC-enabled servers (the vast majority of Rust servers, official and community-run alike) and compares what it detects on your system against known cheat patterns -aimbots, wallhacks, macros, and so on.

Bans don't land instantly: Valve delays them on purpose and applies them in batches, days or weeks after the match where the cheating was detected, so the person using it can't tell exactly what gave them away.

What it actually blocks

A VAC banned account can't join VAC-secured servers in the game where the cheating was detected -for Rust, that's practically every server with real players. The ban stays visible on the public Steam profile for life, even if that person stops playing that game.
