Plant
What do you want to breed?
Gene order doesn't change what a plant does: GGGGYY is the same as YYGGGG. GGGYYY suits almost everything; add an H if your base is in snow or desert.

How crossbreeding works
- Only plants in a planter crossbreed, of the same type and once, at the crossbreed stage. Plants in the ground never do.
- Each of the 6 genes is decided on its own by the plants touching the centre one (diagonals too).
- G, Y and H weigh 0.6; W and X weigh 1. Matching genes add up. The top total replaces the centre's gene only if it weighs more: one good neighbour never changes a slot, two matching ones always do. Ties are a coin flip.
- These are the rules community calculators use: Facepunch doesn't publish the numbers.
FAQ
How does plant crossbreeding work in Rust?
Only in a planter, between plants of the same type, once, at the crossbreed stage. Each of the 6 genes is decided on its own by the plants touching the centre one: G, Y and H weigh 0.6 and W and X weigh 1; matching genes add up and the top total replaces the centre's gene if it weighs more than it. These are the rules community calculators use: Facepunch doesn't publish the numbers.
Which genes are good?
G (grows faster), Y (yields more) and H (copes with poor light, water and temperature) are good; W (drinks more water) and X (does nothing) are bad. Order doesn't matter: GGGYYY is the same as YYYGGG.
What about cow and sheep breeding?
Each animal carries two copies of every gene (dung, longevity, yield, fertility and hardiness) and shows the better one. The young gets one random copy from each parent. Facepunch hasn't published the rules, so the odds are approximate.
Know when they're offline?
Rust Player Tracker alerts you when your neighbours log on or off, and when their whole clan has been gone for a while: your raid window. Free to start.
